Installing SharePoint Server 2010 on Windows 7 x64

Introduction

This post is targeted towards understanding workaround for installation of SharePoint Server 2010 on Windows 7 X64 machine. The procedure remains the same for installing SharePoint Foundation 2010 as well. This will save a lot of hassle and cost on hardware/software as dual boot to load Windows Server 2008 is not needed.

P.S. If you looking for article on installation of WSS v3 / MOSS 2007 on your client OS, you had to use all undocumented tips and tricks.

There is also a tool from Bamboo Solutions which makes life easier.

SharePoint Server 2010 is not directly supported on Windows 7, there is a modifying to be done to config file to run the installation without any error.

Requirements
  • Process Explorer (Download)
  • SharePoint Server 2010 installer
  • Windows 7 x64 as OS
Installation

If you try to install SharePoint on Win 7 OS you'll get the following error when trying to install SharePoint.

Does this means the product is not supported by Windows 7? It's not the case. You need to tweak config file to make it compatible. The challenge is to find the location where the setup is running from. Start up Process Explorer while the installer splash screen is running and you'll see the following:

So it seems that the installer was unpacked in C:\Program Files (x86)\MSECache\oserver2010. You can browse to that directory now.
  • Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSECache\oserver2010
  • Go to the Files folder
  • Go to the Setup folder
  • Open config.xml
  • Add the following line before the closing </configuration> tag
<Setting Id="AllowWindowsClientInstall" Value="True"/>

Once you've modified the config file, you'll be able to install SharePoint Server 2010 on your Windows 7 OS.
